Every 3 years we take a group of students to Washington, DC to participate in the Close Up experience. We attend during a designated week that is open to other high school programs with deaf/hard of hearing peers from across the country. Government level interpreters are hired for the week. Activities include touring the sites of DC (including Lincoln & Washington Memorials, Korean War Veterans Memorial, Arlington Cemetary, Smithsonian Museums), a visit to Capital Hill to meet with our state representatives & congressmen and congresswomen, and evening workshops on lobbying and debating current issues in America. We also extend our stay to allow us time to visit the Holocaust Museum and Gallaudet University, the world’s only university with programs and services specifically designed to accommodate deaf and hard of hearing students.
